Canal Saint Martin's 200-Year Cultural Evolution Unfolds at July Festival

The 2026 Évolution Festival opens July 18 with a walking tour and exhibition that maps the Canal Saint Martin arts scene from its 1825 opening as a freight route through its 1960s decline to its current mix of galleries and performance spaces.

Organizers chose this moment because visitor numbers at canal venues have risen sharply since 2022 while city funding for temporary installations has held steady at 180,000 euros a year. The preview events therefore place new work beside archival photographs and oral histories collected from residents who remember the waterway before the 2007 renovation project widened walkways and added lighting.

From warehouses to artist studios

Early stops on the tour include the former ice factory at 42 Quai de Jemmapes, now home to the nonprofit Point Ephémère, and the ground-floor rooms of the Association des Artistes du Canal on Rue Bichat. Both sites will display original 1920s engineering drawings next to recent installations made by residents who first rented space there after 2008.

Point Ephémère began as a squat in 2004 and now hosts 120 events a year. The association on Rue Bichat, founded in 1997, runs a residency program that has housed 340 artists since it started tracking participants in 2011. Their joint display will occupy both buildings for the full nine days of the festival.

Numbers and next steps

Attendance at last year’s preview reached 9,400 people across five days, according to figures released by the 10th arrondissement cultural office. This year’s program adds four new evening concerts priced at 12 euros and a daytime family workshop series limited to 35 participants each morning. Tickets go on sale July 13 at the ticket window inside the Jardin Villemin entrance on Rue des Écluses Saint-Martin. Advance purchase is required for the walking tours because capacity is capped at 80 people per group.
