The Éclats du Canal festival opens July 18 with three days of live music, film screenings and pop-up installations running from the Bassin du Combat to the locks at Rue de Lancry.
Organizers launched the event to fill a gap left by shrinking public arts budgets in the 10th arrondissement after city funding shifted toward larger venues elsewhere in Paris. The decision came after last winter’s meetings at the local mairie where residents noted that smaller neighborhood programs had lost slots to bigger city-wide initiatives. The timing also coincides with the July school holidays when families stay close to home rather than travel.
Two venues anchor the program. Point Ephémère on Quai de Valmy will host the main stage for evening concerts, while the Association des Riverains du Canal Saint Martin has turned its ground-floor space at 12 Rue Bichat into a daytime workshop area for printmaking and sound installations. The collective that runs both sites includes a former barge captain who now handles logistics and a graphic designer who mapped the route of temporary stages along the towpath.
The team that mapped every detail
Core members began planning in January using a shared spreadsheet that tracked permits, power hookups and volunteer shifts. They secured a 180,000-euro grant from the regional culture office plus 45,000 euros raised through a local crowdfunding drive that closed in April. Expected attendance this year is 28,000 people across the three days, up from 19,500 in 2025 when the event ran for only two days.
Practical details include free entry to all daytime workshops and 12-euro tickets for the evening concerts sold through the Point Ephémère box office. The schedule lists the first film screening at 8 p.m. on July 18 at the Rue de Lancry locks and the final set ending at 11 p.m. on July 20.
How to catch the shows
Residents can pick up printed programs at the Jardin Villemin information desk starting Monday or download the PDF from the association’s site. Early arrival is advised for the limited seating at the main stage, and the towpath between Rue de la Grange aux Belles and Quai de Jemmapes will stay open for those who prefer to listen from the water’s edge.
