The fortress at No. 232, rue Saint-Antoine was stormed on July 14, 1789, during a period of French economic distress driven by costs from the American Revolution, regressive taxes, and poor harvests. Place de la Bastille now occupies the former site and operates as one neighbourhood within Paris. Its commercial activity, including markets such as Marché Bastille and Marché d’Aligre, falls under the city’s broader economic accounts rather than any distinct local figures.

Surveys from 2013 recorded that roughly 90 percent of French citizens viewed economic conditions as bad and 80 percent expressed dissatisfaction with the country’s direction. Those national-level findings remain the closest available indicators, with no later Bastille-specific statistics recorded in available records.

Opéra Bastille and surrounding transport links serve residents and visitors, yet all activity contributes to Paris-wide totals. The absence of isolated reporting follows directly from the site’s loss of independent status after 1789.

The neighbourhood continues as a residential and commercial zone inside the French capital. Economic conditions there are therefore measured only through the lens of Paris and national statistics rather than any standalone Bastille economy.
