Belleville Expands Sewage, Roads, and Transit to Support Growing Community

Belleville has approved a $43.1 million contract for the Avonlough sewage pumping station, described as its largest infrastructure project ever, with construction scheduled from summer 2026 to December 2028 to serve 9,000 new residents over 25 years.

Sewage and Water System Upgrades

The Avonlough project directly addresses capacity needs tied to population growth. Additional work includes reconstruction of sections of Orchard Drive and Pringle Drive by contractors including K. Mulrooney Trucking, which will install new water mains and sewers with completion expected by the end of 2026. These efforts replace aging infrastructure that currently limits service reliability in affected areas.

Road Reconstruction Efforts

Major reconstruction on Bridge Street East between Herchimer Avenue and Haig Road began in May 2026 to replace aging water mains and sewers, with completion targeted for winter 2027. Separate road reconstructions are underway on Church St, Pinnacle St, Victoria Ave, Old Hwy #2 and Phillipston Rd. The city is also carrying out rehabilitation at Meyers Pier and renewal at the Wastewater Treatment Plant to maintain core municipal functions.

Transit and Active Transportation Investments

A $4.69 million federal investment is funding six public transit projects that include new hybrid buses, the Hydro Corridor Trail and bus stop upgrades. Ontario and the city are contributing approximately $8 million combined toward these initiatives. The projects seek to expand options for daily travel and connections across the community.

These coordinated infrastructure works are intended to reduce service disruptions over time and support ongoing residential and commercial activity.
