Paris Canal Saint-Martin Upgrade Diverges from Global City Approaches

The 10th arrondissement council held a public restitution meeting on June 4, 2026, to report on the Canal Saint-Martin renovation progress and outline steps until the final delivery in December 2027.

The project timing follows the completion of the first mobility phase on the Quai de Valmy and the scheduled second phase from October 2024 to February 2026. Residents and local groups now have a clear window to review how the work will reshape daily access along the waterway before the 2027 handover.

Local scope of the works

The redevelopment project, costing between €13 million and €15 million, aims to create 3.4 km of cycling facilities, 147 new bicycle bays, and 10,400 m² of pedestrian space by 2026. Natural space improvements include planting 52 trees, developing 3,205 m² of open-ground vegetation, and installing 10 biodiversity refuges to create an 'intergenerational space for culture, sport and relaxation'. Additional planned amenities include 2 new public toilets, 15 sorting shelters, 50 benches, 2 pedestrian bridges, and 18 crosswalks to reinforce water and quay cleanliness.

Approach set against other cities

Paris has chosen to sequence the mobility upgrades around the Paris Olympics and to pair them with measurable green additions such as the 52 trees and 10 refuges. Other large cities often complete similar waterway or waterfront renewals with heavier emphasis on commercial activation or single-use transport corridors, leaving less integrated space for vegetation and public seating. The 10th arrondissement plan keeps both the cycling network and the biodiversity elements within the same budget envelope and the same 2027 deadline.

Work already visible on the Quai de Valmy shows how the council has used the post-Olympics window to advance the second phase without further delay. The remaining tasks focus on finishing the listed amenities and ensuring the new facilities reach the stated totals for cycle lanes, pedestrian area and tree cover.
