Officials Outline Canal Saint-Martin Road Bans and Transit Options

City records show motorized vehicles stay banned on the Canal Saint-Martin except for local service, emergencies and deliveries, with construction works scheduled to finish the policy by late 2025 or early 2026.

Paris Respire closures and canal rules

Officials have kept roads along both sides of the canal closed to motor traffic on Sundays and public holidays through the Paris Respire program. Navigation speed stays capped at 6 km/h across the full canal network, and parking remains prohibited outside the Bassin de l'Arsenal and Bassin Louis-Blanc. A temporary halt to navigation runs from July 5 to September 6, 2026, in the Bassin des Récollets to create a new bathing area.

These measures matter now because the July 15 date falls inside the 2026 navigation pause, forcing pleasure craft and boat tours to reroute while road rules continue unchanged. The canal connects the Bassin de la Villette to the Seine through nine locks and two swing bridges that create a 25-meter elevation change.

Metro and bus access points

Public transport records list direct metro stops at Jacques Bonsergent on Line 5, République on Lines 3, 5, 8, 9 and 11, and Goncourt on Line 11. Bus lines 46 and 75 also serve the area. Service runs from about 5:30 AM to 1:15 AM on weekdays.
