Canal Saint-Martin Redevelopment: The Path to 2026 Bicentenary Completion

The Canal Saint-Martin redevelopment project is set to finish by 2026 after roughly two years of construction, timed to mark the canal's bicentenary. The effort centers on shifting priority to bikes and pedestrians while limiting most motorized vehicles except for local delivery, emergency services and maintenance.

Origins in phased construction planning

Construction has been split into distinct stages to manage disruption around the Paris Olympics period. Mobility work ran from February to June 2024 and then resumed from October 2024 through February 2026. Landscaping followed a separate schedule from October 2024 to December 2025. These dates were set so the full transformation could be ready for the 1825 canal's bicentenary celebrations.

Key mobility and safety upgrades underway

The mobility phase includes 3.4 km of bicycle installations that form two vélo-rues, 147 new bike parking spots and 10,400 m² of space reserved exclusively for pedestrians. Pedestrian safety features add 18 new crossings and two pedestrianized bridges. The greening elements comprise 52 new trees and 10 biodiversity refuges across the site.

Why the changes matter for local neighbourhoods

The project covers the Canal Saint-Martin area that runs through the 10th, 11th and 19th arrondissements. Station F, the large startup incubator in the 10th arrondissement near the canal, sits within the same district that residents and workers use daily. The vehicle restrictions and new pedestrian and cycle infrastructure aim to create a modern gathering space along the historic waterway.
