The Montparnasse municipal council approved the Infrastructure and Employment Strategy on July 7, which sets aside 32 million euros from the 2026 operating budget for upgrades to three road corridors and one community service facility.

Residents who use the Avenue du Maine and Rue de la Gaîté routes will see resurfacing and new bus priority lanes begin in September. The legislation states that these changes target the 14,500 daily commuters recorded in the 2025 traffic survey who travel to jobs in central Paris offices. A separate allocation funds expansion of the Rue Delambre day-care center, adding 45 places for children of shift workers employed at nearby hotels and medical offices.

Local advocates note that the projects focus on sections within 800 meters of Gare Montparnasse, where the Productivity Commission has found average one-way travel times exceed 38 minutes during peak hours. The strategy document lists the three corridors by name and requires that at least 60 percent of the construction contracts go to firms with headquarters inside the city limits.

Budget Figures and Next Steps

The 2026 municipal budget paper records the 32 million euro line item under capital works, with 19 million euros assigned to road works and 13 million euros to the service facility. Tenders for the first phase open on August 4 and close September 15, after which the city clerk will publish the winning bids on the municipal website.

Implementation runs through December 2027, with quarterly progress reports required under the council resolution. The government says the policy will draw on existing workforce training programs run by the regional employment office to match residents with the new positions.
