Belleville's Green Tech Projects Save Taxpayers Money, Battery Expansion Planned

Belleville installed rooftop solar panels at seven schools plus the middle and high schools, with solar-powered carports at Schools 8, 10, and the high school. Those measures are projected to save taxpayers $2 million over 15 years.

The installations form part of a wider pattern of renewable additions that include solar panels at Meyers Pier and the Water Treatment Plant, plus extensive rooftop solar with grid-return converters at the Quinte Sports and Wellness Centre. Solar-wind hybrid light poles stand at the high school and School 9. The city also brought new solar projects online at the Gerry O'Connor Water Treatment Plant and the former Neil Britton Building.

Combined Systems and Waste Diversion Add Scale

Combined Heat and Power units were installed at the Quinte Sport & Wellness Centre to heat swimming pools using waste heat. In a separate 12-week pilot, 13 FoodCycler units were deployed in apartment buildings. The units are expected to divert 4.5 metric tonnes of food waste annually and cut CO₂ emissions by 6.8 metric tonnes per year.

These projects sit alongside Belleville's evaluation of a Battery Energy Storage System proposed by FirstLight Power. The system would store electricity from wind and solar sources for later use on the hydro grid.

Tracking Returns and Next Steps

The documented savings figure of $2 million over 15 years comes directly from the school solar rollout. Emission reductions and waste tonnage numbers are tied to the apartment pilot. No additional capital outlays or external funding amounts appear in city records released so far.
