Journaling as a Mindfulness Tool: How to Start
Bastille residents are adopting notebook-based reflection to deepen meditation without relying on apps or retreats.
How we reported this
Over 180 people signed up for the introductory journaling workshop held June 22 at the Bastille Public Library branch on Riverwalk Avenue.
Interest has grown because many locals already practice short daily meditation but want a low-cost way to track thoughts and notice patterns over time. The approach fits the city’s emphasis on everyday wellness rather than scheduled studio visits.
The Bastille Wellness Collective on Elm Street runs a six-week journaling circle that meets Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. Participants also drop in at the Green Park Pavilion, where the city’s Parks Department supplies free notebooks and pens for guided 20-minute sessions each Saturday morning.
Building the habit with clear steps
A 2023 study in the Journal of Clinical Psychology tracked 142 adults who wrote for 15 minutes daily and recorded a 25 percent average reduction in self-reported anxiety after four weeks. Local classes at the Wellness Collective cost $18 per session or $90 for the full series, with materials included.
Begin by choosing a notebook small enough to carry and setting a fixed time, such as right after morning coffee. Write whatever surfaces for five minutes without editing. Over the next week add one prompt, such as noting three physical sensations noticed during the previous meditation sit. Review entries every Sunday to mark one recurring theme.
Next steps for ongoing practice
After two weeks most participants extend the writing window to ten minutes and pair it with a single breath-focus exercise before closing the notebook. The Parks Department program at Green Park provides a printed tracking sheet that logs session length and mood on a 1-to-10 scale. Residents who want to continue can register for the next Collective cohort through the city website before July 20.
