Belleville Council Gyms Offer 10+ Group Exercise Classes Weekly
From aqua aerobics to high-intensity circuits, Belleville's council gyms and recreation centres offer more structured group fitness options than most residents realise.
How we reported this

Belleville City Council is running 47 weekly group exercise sessions across its three public recreation facilities this winter term, a number that has grown by roughly 30 percent since 2023. The sessions range from low-impact yoga and seated strength classes aimed at over-65s, to bootcamp-style circuits that fill up within hours of the term schedule dropping online.
The timing matters. Cost-of-living pressure has pushed more residents toward council-operated fitness options over the past 18 months. A casual group class at a private Belleville studio now commonly runs between $28 and $45 per session. The equivalent at a council facility, once you factor in the Belleville Active Membership, which costs $180 per quarter, works out closer to $9 a session if you attend three times a week. That gap is widening, and enrolments show it.
What's On and Where
The Northside Aquatic and Leisure Centre on Hargreaves Street anchors the council's fitness calendar. Its pool deck hosts three aqua aerobics classes each weekday morning, starting at 7:15 a.m., plus a deeper-water resistance session on Wednesday evenings specifically designed for people managing joint conditions. The centre's Group Fitness Studio 2, the smaller of its two dedicated rooms, runs Pilates reformer circuits on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, capped at 12 participants per class.
Across the river, the Eastfield Community Recreation Hub on Dempster Road has built a strong following for its Les Mills-licensed BODYPUMP and BODYBALANCE classes, offered Tuesday through Saturday. The Hub also runs a free-of-charge Community Fitness Hour every Sunday at 9 a.m. under the Belleville Council Active Communities Initiative, a program targeting residents who have not previously engaged with structured exercise. No booking is required for that session.
The third facility, the Westgate Wellness Precinct near the corner of Caldwell Avenue and Tribune Street, skews toward mind-body formats. Its timetable this term includes three weekly yoga classes, two Tai Chi sessions popular with the Belleville seniors demographic, and a newer Friday lunchtime session called Core & Breathwork that has a waitlist of 11 people as of this week.
How to Get In and What It Costs
Walk-in casual rates apply at all three centres for residents who want to trial a class before committing. A single casual group class is $14 for adults and $9 for concession cardholders. Under-16s attend free when accompanied by a paying adult. The Belleville Active Membership unlocks unlimited class bookings and is available to purchase online through the Council Recreation Portal or in person at any of the three venues. Pensioner Concession Card holders qualify for a reduced quarterly rate of $95.
Bookings for the current winter term, which runs from July 7 to September 19, opened on July 1 through the same portal. Popular sessions like Saturday morning BODYPUMP at Eastfield and Tuesday Pilates at Northside had remaining spots as of Thursday, but the Council's recreation staff suggest booking at least a week ahead for any session with a 12 to 15 person cap.
For residents with specific health conditions or returning to exercise after a significant break, the Council's Exercise Physiology Referral Program connects participants with an accredited exercise physiologist for a discounted initial assessment, currently priced at $35. Speak to staff at any of the three reception desks, or ask your local GP about a referral under the program. Council staff are not qualified to give medical advice, and anyone with an existing condition should check with a Belleville-based medical professional before starting a new class format.
The full winter term timetable is available at the Belleville City Council website and on printed schedules at all three venues. The council has indicated a revised spring term schedule will be published by August 22.
