Belleville Parkrun Attracts Runners Every Saturday Morning
Belleville's parks are filling up every Saturday morning with runners of every pace, here's what you need to know before you show up.
How we reported this
Every Saturday at 8 a.m., Riverside Linear Park transforms. What's normally a quiet stretch of path along the Belleville waterfront becomes a coloured blur of running shoes, volunteer marshals in hi-vis vests, and dogs straining at leads. The Belleville Riverside parkrun clocked 347 finishers on its record weekend in May 2026, and organisers say summer numbers are climbing again.
The timing matters. Belleville has spent the past three years investing heavily in its outdoor fitness infrastructure, and participation in free community running events has tracked that investment almost exactly. The city's Parks and Recreation Department completed the $2.1 million Riverside Linear Park trail upgrade in March 2025, widening the path to 3.5 metres between Founders Bridge and the Mill Street boat ramp, a stretch that now doubles as the parkrun course's flat central kilometre. When the path got better, the crowds followed.
The Two Courses Worth Knowing
Belleville currently hosts two active parkrun events, each with a distinct character. Riverside Linear Park is the older of the two, established in 2019. Its 5-kilometre loop is fast and forgiving, starting at the Founders Bridge car park on Wharf Avenue, swinging south past the Heritage Boathouse café, and finishing back where you started. Personal bests happen here regularly. The course record, set in February 2026, stands at 15 minutes and 41 seconds.
The newer option is Hillcrest Reserve parkrun, launched in September 2024 on the elevated eastern edge of the city near the junction of Maple Drive and Crestwood Boulevard. This one is honest about what it asks of you: 94 metres of total elevation gain across the 5 kilometres, with a sharp climb in the final 800 metres that has become something of a local legend. The Belleville Trail Runners Club, which has roughly 210 members, uses the Hillcrest course as part of its Tuesday evening training circuit and actively encourages newcomers to show up on Saturdays to trial the route before committing to club runs.
Both events are free, permanent, and weekly. Parkrun's global model, founded in Bushy Park in the United Kingdom in 2004, requires only a one-time online registration at parkrun.com before you can scan your barcode at any event worldwide. There are no entry fees, no timing chips to hire, and no minimum pace requirement. Walkers are explicitly welcome.
What to Expect When You Show Up
First-timers should arrive by 7:45 a.m. The Riverside event holds a brief newcomers' briefing near the start line at ten minutes to eight. Bring a printed or digital barcode, without it, your time won't be recorded. Wear comfortable shoes. That's genuinely the full list of requirements.
The Belleville Community Health Centre on Garden Street ran an analysis of its own patient referral data in early 2026 and found that structured outdoor physical activity, including parkrun, was among the top three lifestyle recommendations made by GPs for patients managing mild to moderate anxiety and cardiovascular risk. The centre now keeps a stack of parkrun registration cards at its front desk. Anyone with specific health concerns should speak with a GP or allied health professional before starting a new exercise program.
Volunteer rosters for both Belleville events are open on the parkrun website and typically need filling two to three weeks in advance. Marshalling, tail-walking, and timekeeping are the most common roles. The events only run because volunteers show up, and a morning spent directing runners at the Hillcrest summit marshal point, with views across the Belleville valley, is, by most accounts, not a bad way to spend a Saturday.
The next Riverside Linear Park parkrun is this Saturday, July 4, starting at 8 a.m. from Founders Bridge car park on Wharf Avenue. Hillcrest Reserve runs on the same morning from the Maple Drive trailhead. Registration is at parkrun.com.
