Parisians Reveal Secret Nature Walks Hidden from Tourists
Canal Saint Martin residents have long used lesser-known green corridors for daily movement away from the main tourist routes.
How we reported this
Residents in the 10th arrondissement have increased their use of three lesser-known paths along the canal edges this summer, with daily foot traffic on the Rue Bichat green strip rising to 1,200 walkers on weekdays according to local count data from June.
The shift comes as more people seek outdoor routines after indoor fitness spaces reported capacity limits through spring. City records show the number of registered wellness groups using public green space in the quarter grew from 18 in 2024 to 34 by May 2026, driven by free access and proximity to homes between the canal locks and Place de la République.
Two overlooked routes near everyday streets
One route starts at the small garden behind the Square des Récollets and follows the narrow planted strip beside Rue de Lancry before linking to the quieter side of Quai de Jemmapes. Another begins at the eastern edge of Jardin Villemin, crosses the footbridge at Rue Bichat and continues along the shaded service path that runs parallel to the water toward the Jaurès basin. Both segments stay off the main canal towpath where visitors cluster.
The Canal Saint Martin Fitness Collective has run weekly Wednesday morning sessions on the Rue Bichat strip since March 2025, charging no fee and limiting groups to 12 people. A separate program from the local chapter of Paris Rando Nature added Saturday afternoon walks starting at 4pm from the Jardin Villemin gate, with the first 2026 outing scheduled for 11 July.
Practical steps for first visits
Walkers can reach the Rue Bichat entrance in under eight minutes from the Jacques Bonsergent métro stop. The full loop along both routes measures 2.8 kilometres and takes 45 minutes at a steady pace. No permits are required, though participants in the Wednesday sessions are asked to arrive by 7:45am to join the warm-up. Those starting later can follow the same path independently using the posted map at the Jardin Villemin notice board.
