Local Chefs Share 5 Summer Recipes Using Canal Saint Martin Produce
Canal Saint Martin residents can build quick summer meals around apricots, zucchini and tomatoes from nearby stands this July.
How we reported this
Shoppers filled the weekly produce stalls along the Canal Saint Martin on Thursday morning with bags of ripe apricots, young zucchini and vine tomatoes priced at 2.80 euros per kilo.
July marks the height of the Paris basin harvest, when shorter supply chains cut both cost and transport emissions for households that cook at home several times a week.
Stands set up near Rue de Lancry and the Canal Saint Martin wellness collective on Rue de la Grange aux Belles have stocked the same items since the first weekend in July, drawing residents who attend the group’s Thursday evening prep sessions.
National agricultural data released last month showed that households buying directly from regional growers cut their average weekly produce spend by 14 percent compared with supermarket prices recorded in June 2025.
Market finds this week
Five straightforward dishes use only what is available at those two sites right now. Apricot and almond salad tosses halved fruit with toasted almonds and a squeeze of lemon. Zucchini ribbons are peeled into thin strips, dressed with olive oil and mint, then topped with crumbled feta. Tomato and basil bruschetta combines diced tomatoes with garlic and day-old baguette slices from the same vendors. Cherry yogurt compote simmers a handful of cherries with a spoon of honey for five minutes before spooning over plain yogurt. Herb ratatouille simmers zucchini, tomatoes and fresh thyme in one pot for twenty minutes.
Putting them to use
Anyone can scale the portions for two or four and finish cooking inside thirty minutes. The wellness collective posts the ingredient list each Monday on its notice board at Rue de la Grange aux Belles so participants arrive ready to work. Those who prefer to cook solo can buy the exact quantities needed at the Thursday market and return home before the afternoon heat builds.
