Canal Saint Martin Residents Get Ratings for 3 Popular Walking Trails
Canal Saint Martin residents gain clear ratings for three popular paths based on length and challenge starting this month.
How we reported this
Three walking trails along the Canal Saint Martin now carry official distance and difficulty ratings issued by the local arrondissement office on 8 July 2026.
Wellness programmes in the 10th arrondissement have expanded this summer as residents seek outdoor options during longer daylight hours and rising temperatures recorded at 28 degrees Celsius on average in early July.
Routes along the canal and nearby squares
The shortest path runs from the lock at Rue de Lancry to Square Frédéric Lemaitre, covering 1.4 kilometres on flat ground rated easy. A moderate option follows Quai de Valmy north to Jardin Villemin then loops back via Rue Bichat for 3.8 kilometres with two short inclines. The longest trail starts at the same lock, crosses the canal footbridge and continues to the edge of the 19th arrondissement along the water for 6.2 kilometres, marked difficult because of uneven paving and one steep section near the Bassin du Combat.
Measured distances and usage data
City records show 4,200 people logged walks on these routes in June 2026 through the free Canal Saint Martin fitness app, up from 2,900 the same month last year. The ratings appear on new signposts at each starting point and list exact distances plus estimated times for average walkers.
Anyone starting a rated trail can pick up a printed map at the Maison des Associations on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Martin or download the app for turn-by-turn audio cues. Participants are advised to carry water and check the daily air-quality index posted at the canal locks before heading out.
