Free Outdoor Gyms Transform Canal Saint-Martin Into Fitness Hub
Residents in the 10th arrondissement are using no-cost equipment along the waterway and nearby squares to maintain routines without indoor gym fees.
How we reported this

Canal Saint Martin added two permanent outdoor fitness circuits this May that give residents pull-up bars, parallel bars and step platforms at no charge.
The installations arrived ahead of peak summer demand when indoor options charge 45 euros monthly and temperatures push people outside. City records show the 10th arrondissement recorded its warmest June on file in 2025, driving more people toward shaded canal paths for exercise.
Circuits at the water’s edge
One station sits on Quai de Jemmapes just south of the Rue Bichat footbridge, with six fixed pieces of equipment spaced along 80 metres of path. A second cluster occupies the northern edge of Jardin Villemin, where the Paris parks service placed rubberised matting and resistance bands stations in 2024. Both sites stay open from dawn until 10 pm under standard city lighting schedules.
Local group Les Promeneurs du Canal has run free Saturday morning circuit sessions at these spots since March 2025, drawing between 25 and 40 participants each week. The sessions focus on body-weight movements and require no registration.
Usage data and access details
A Mairie de Paris survey released in April 2026 counted 11,200 monthly visits across the 10th arrondissement’s outdoor fitness sites, up 28 percent from the same period in 2024. Equipment at both Canal Saint Martin locations receives weekly safety checks on Tuesdays.
Users should arrive before 8 am on weekdays to avoid crowds and bring their own water bottle, as nearby fountains operate only from May through September. The sites remain accessible by métro stops Jacques Bonsergent and République.
