Latin Quarter Early Risers Discover Hidden Parks for Dawn Yoga
Early risers in the Latin Quarter are claiming quiet corners in neighborhood parks for daily yoga and meditation sessions that start before 6 a.m.
How we reported this

More than 40 people spread mats across the grass at the Square de la Sorbonne on Rue Saint-Jacques at 5:45 a.m. on July 8 for a guided sunrise yoga class led by instructors from the Latin Quarter Wellness Collective.
Interest in these outdoor sessions has risen sharply since the city extended its free park access hours last spring, giving residents reliable space to practice before work or family duties begin. The trend aligns with a broader push by local groups to promote low-cost wellness options amid rising indoor studio fees that now average 18 euros per drop-in class.
Two reliable sunrise locations
The Square de la Sorbonne offers flat lawn sections shielded by plane trees that block early wind while still catching first light around 6:10 a.m. A second spot sits at the eastern edge of Parc Montsouris along Boulevard Jourdan, where a gravel clearing near the duck pond stays empty until after 7 a.m. and allows uninterrupted breathing exercises without street noise. Both sites fall inside the Latin Quarter boundaries and remain open 24 hours under current municipal rules.
A 2025 count by the Latin Quarter Parks Department logged 3,200 individual visits to these two locations between May and September for meditation or yoga, up 28 percent from the same period in 2024. The collective charges nothing for its weekday sunrise sessions and posts the weekly schedule on its bulletin board at 12 Rue Mouffetard.
How to join a session
Arrive by 5:30 a.m. with a mat and water bottle; the collective supplies blocks and straps on request. Beginners can follow the 45-minute sequence at their own pace while instructors move through the group to offer adjustments. Participants are asked to leave the grounds by 7:15 a.m. so regular park users can take over the space. Anyone with an injury should check with a doctor before starting.
