Latin Quarter Residents Access Free Mental Health Counseling Without Appointments
Residents in the Latin Quarter can reach free counseling and stress programs through established community sites without appointments in many cases.
How we reported this
The Latin Quarter Health Board opened expanded free mental health drop-in hours on 8 July 2026 at its two main sites after demand rose 18 percent in the first half of the year.
Network outages earlier this month left many residents without phones or transport for hours, adding to everyday work and family pressures that already strain mental health in the district. Local data shows stress-related visits to primary care clinics on Rue Saint-Jacques climbed from 340 in May to 410 in June, prompting the board to extend hours rather than create new waiting lists.
Key sites and programs
Walk-in counseling operates at the Latin Quarter Wellness Centre at 14 Rue Mouffetard every Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with no charge and no referral required. The centre also runs a six-week stress-management course that meets on Wednesday evenings and supplies workbooks printed in French, English and Spanish. A second location, the Community Mind Room inside the annex of the Jardin des Plantes on Rue Buffon, offers group sessions on mindfulness and sleep on Mondays and Fridays at 6 p.m.; participants register once at the front desk and can attend up to eight meetings before a check-in with a coordinator.
Both sites accept residents of the 5th arrondissement and neighbouring streets with proof of address such as a utility bill or library card. Services began in March 2025 with funding from the district wellness levy and have remained free since opening.
Practical steps to begin
Anyone can arrive 15 minutes early at either address, sign a short intake form and speak with a licensed counselor the same day. For those who prefer advance planning, the board website lists current session times and a phone line answered between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. that books the next available slot. Coordinators recommend starting with one drop-in visit to learn about longer programs, including referral to a psychiatrist if needed at no additional cost.
Residents who complete an initial session receive a printed card listing follow-up options and a direct line to the after-hours support team. The board plans to add evening hours at Rue Mouffetard in September if attendance stays above 120 people per week.
