More Montmartre residents have begun arriving at hilltop parks before 6 a.m. this summer to practice meditation and yoga ahead of the workday.
The shift follows the opening of extended daylight hours on 1 July, when sunrise moved to 5:58 a.m. City data released last month showed a 28 percent rise in permit requests for group fitness activities in the 18th arrondissement between May and June compared with the same period in 2025.
Key sunrise locations
Square Suzanne Buisson, tucked between Rue Girardon and Rue Lamarck, offers flat grass and stone benches that face east toward the rising sun. Practitioners spread mats near the central fountain, where the surrounding plane trees provide light shade once the light strengthens. A short walk east leads to the upper terraces of Square Willette, directly below Sacré-Cœur, where the wide steps serve as natural alignment markers for standing poses and the view opens across the city rooftops.
Both sites sit within the Butte Montmartre neighbourhood and remain accessible via the Montmartrobus stops at Place du Tertre and Rue des Abbesses. Local instructors from the Montmartre Yoga Association have run free drop-in sessions at these two parks every Tuesday and Thursday since the start of the month.
Getting started this summer
Participants pay 8 euros for a single session or 45 euros for a six-class pass through the association’s online portal. Sessions begin at 6:15 a.m. and last 45 minutes, finishing before commuter traffic builds on Rue Lepic. Those arriving by foot are advised to enter from the western side of Square Suzanne Buisson to avoid the steeper climb from Rue Caulaincourt.
Residents planning to attend should check the Mairie du 18e website for weather-related cancellations and bring a light layer, as temperatures at the butte crest can sit three degrees cooler than street level at dawn. First-time visitors can register at the association’s information table set up near the entrance to Square Willette on Rue Foyatier each Monday evening between 7 and 8 p.m.
