Dog Owners Transform Montmartre Parks Into Fitness Communities
Residents in the Abbesses and Tertre neighbourhoods now combine daily dog walks with group strength sessions and yoga flows in the same green spaces.
How we reported this
Attendance at dog-friendly fitness sessions in Montmartre parks has risen 28 percent since January 2025, according to records kept by the local mairie’s sports office.
The shift matters because Montmartre’s compact layout leaves few large open spaces, so any site that serves both pets and people reduces the need for separate trips and builds routine exercise into existing schedules.
Two spots stand out. Square Suzanne Buisson, at the foot of Rue Girardon, added a fenced dog run in 2023 and now hosts free Tuesday and Thursday morning circuits led by trainers from the Montmartre Sports Association; participants use the park’s stone benches for step-ups while their dogs socialise nearby. A few blocks east, Parc de la Turlure on Rue de la Turlure opened its gates to off-lead dogs in April 2024 and runs a Saturday 8 a.m. group walk that ends with body-weight drills on the grass terraces overlooking the city.
Local routines and costs
Both parks charge nothing for entry, though the association asks 12 euros per month for optional insurance that covers minor injuries during sessions. Data from the mairie show 1,240 registered participants across these two sites last quarter, with peak numbers between 7 and 9 a.m. on weekdays when commuters drop dogs before heading to the Lamarck-Caulaincourt métro.
Trainers report that mixed human-and-canine groups have cut average session cancellations by half compared with indoor studios, because owners rarely skip when their pets expect the outing.
Getting started this week
Arrive at Square Suzanne Buisson by 7:15 a.m. on Tuesdays for the 45-minute circuit, or join the Turlure walk any Saturday from the lower entrance at Rue Foyatier. Bring a leash, waste bags and a mat if you prefer floor work; water fountains operate year-round. Residents new to the format can text the sports office at 01 42 52 44 00 to receive the current schedule before their first visit.
