How we reported this

Montmartre residents began using a five-point sleep environment checklist this week after local health data showed average nightly rest dropping below six hours for adults in the 18th arrondissement.
Longer daylight hours and persistent street-level noise from evening tourism have prompted the shift, with the checklist focusing on temperature control, light blocking, sound reduction, mattress support and airflow rather than supplements or apps.
Programs on Rue Caulaincourt and Rue des Abbesses
The Montmartre Wellness Collective launched its summer sleep audit sessions last month at its Rue Caulaincourt location, where participants receive printed checklists and can test portable sound meters on loan. Two blocks away, the community centre at 23 Rue des Abbesses runs weekly evening workshops that include demonstrations of blackout liners fitted to typical Haussmann windows.
Both sites draw from a 2025 Paris health survey that found 62 percent of residents in northern arrondissements reported disrupted sleep linked to external light and temperature swings above 24 degrees Celsius at night.
Practical steps and local costs
Residents can buy a basic room thermometer for 12 euros at the hardware store on Rue Lepic and install acoustic curtains starting at 85 euros per window from a supplier near Place du Tertre. The checklist advises keeping bedroom temperatures between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius, using matte paint or heavy drapes to cut incoming light below 10 lux, and positioning beds away from party-wall noise sources.
Those who complete the audit at either centre receive a follow-up visit after 14 days to measure changes with the same sound and light meters. Participants are advised to consult a local médecin généraliste before making major changes to sleep routines.
