How we reported this
Three trails through Saint Germain Des Pres now carry official ratings based on measured distances and elevation changes recorded by the arrondissement's parks department in May 2026.
The rankings arrive as daytime temperatures climb past 28 degrees Celsius and more residents seek structured outdoor movement instead of gym sessions. City records show a 22 percent rise in park entries between June and early July last year, prompting the 6th arrondissement to publish updated trail data before the August holiday rush.
Walkers start the shortest route at the church square on Place Saint-Germain-des-Prés, cross Rue Bonaparte and enter the western gates of Jardin du Luxembourg for a flat 2.1-kilometre loop around the Medici Fountain and the Sénat terrace. A moderate option begins at the same square, follows Quai des Grands Augustins to the Pont des Arts footbridge, then returns via Rue de Seine for 4.8 kilometres with one short flight of steps at the quay. The longest route starts at the same church square, climbs to Rue de l'Abbaye, crosses into the Luxembourg Gardens and continues to the southern exit near Avenue de l'Observatoire before looping back along Boulevard Saint-Michel, covering 7.3 kilometres and 65 metres of cumulative ascent.
Beginner and moderate options
The 2.1-kilometre Jardin du Luxembourg circuit stays on paved paths with benches every 300 metres and drinking fountains at the Orangerie and the central basin. The 4.8-kilometre Seine route passes the École des Beaux-Arts and offers shaded stretches under plane trees along the quay. Both paths connect directly to the Mairie du 6e arrondissement's free Wednesday morning wellness walks, which begin at 8:30 a.m. from the church square and cost nothing to join.
Longer challenge route
The 7.3-kilometre loop includes two steeper sections near the Luxembourg Gardens' southern perimeter and requires crossing two busy boulevards. Participants in the arrondissement's 2025 outdoor fitness survey logged an average of 9,400 steps on this route, compared with 5,100 steps on the shorter loops. The same survey noted that 38 percent of respondents preferred trails longer than six kilometres during July and August.
Residents can download the arrondissement's free trail map from the mairie website or pick up printed copies at the information desk inside Jardin du Luxembourg's main gate. Those planning longer walks should carry water and check the 6th arrondissement air-quality alerts posted daily at the church square notice board before setting out.
